Eco-Stewardship
Our commitment to the earth--and each other.
We recognize the bounty and wonder of God's good earth. As stewards of His creation, we embrace the spirit of St. Francis to honor all living things.
We are committed to using resources wisely. We recycle, employ energy-efficient practices and minimize paper use. Our students also participate in a waste-free lunch program in which reusable containers replace landfill-clogging paper and plastic packaging. Students compost fruit and vegetable waste, creating 20 pounds of compost each year.
Our school also owns and operates an organic greenhouse on campus. Students use compost created in the compost bins to create nutrient-rich soil blocks. They then plant seeds, nurture seedlings and harvest crops for use by school families and at school lunches.
The greenhouse not only enables students to learn about sustainable practices and the benefits of healthy soils, pesticide-free produce, clean waterways and reduced global emissions. It also helps them serve those in need. St. Francis School will sell crops and flowering plants to help sponsor a Sparrow Child or raise money for the needy in our community.
By reducing waste, creating sustainable crops and raising charitable funds, we teach students how to reduce our impact on the earth. And positively increase our impact on the lives of others.
