Summer Schedule

The school office will be closed June 30th through August 1st. Mrs. Frost will be checking in once a week during that time. If you need anything, please leave her a voicemail or an e-mail and she will get back to you.

Miss Maxwell’s Summer Reading Program

What better way to spend your summer than with a little READING! Yes, my Summer Reading Program is back, but this year there are a few changes. First of all, this summer you have an opportunity to earn 100 extra credit points. Secondly, all of your points go toward a class prize, and thirdly, you can earn points for individual prizes as well! So here it is and have fun:

Reading Program - description of the Summer Reading Program

Reading Adventures - use this form to keep track of books you read

Library Adventures - use this form to keep track of library events you attended

Coupon Tracker - this form will help you keep track of the Blue Coupons you turn in at the library

Summer Scrip

Scrip will be available throughout the summer during school office hours. Special orders will not occur as frequently, but feel free to call or email me when you would like to place an order, and I can let you know the timing.

Please note that you have until 6/30/08 to purchase scrip that will count for the current school year. Starting 7/1/08, Scrip purchases will be applied toward the ‘08-’09 school year. Please remember that Escrip (using your Safeway Club Card) and Albertsons Partners Cards will not be applied toward your $2,500 minimum purchase amount for the next school year. However, every dollar counts toward the school, so please continue using these cards and signing up your family and friends!

Cub Scout News

The June pack meeting will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Shevlin Pond. We will start fishing about 5:30pm and food will be served around 6pm. Awards and rank advancement will follow. The pack will provide hotdogs and condiments. Each family needs to bring fishing gear for the kids, a dish to share, and chairs or picnic blanket. Dress for the weather; we’ll meet rain or shine. There is still time to register for Cub Scout Day Camp from Monday through Thursday, June 23 -26th. If you are interested please contact Janet at 388-4527. You don’t need to be a current scout to attend.

The ‘M’ Zone

Hello middle school families! At the suggestion of a couple of parents, I have listed two websites that may be of some help to those of you who want to have their children work on some math over the summer. It’s important to remember that many concepts are repeated, albeit in greater depth, each year in mathematics. Nevertheless, it never hurts to do a little extra studying, even in the summertime.

For incoming 6th graders, I would strongly recommend making sure you know your multiplication tables up to 12 times 12. Also be comfortable with basic numeric operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For additional preparation, I would peruse the websites below for some ideas.

New 7th and 8th graders would benefit from working with ratio and proportion, especially real-life application problems. By “ratio and proportion” I also mean using decimals, percents, and fractions and conversions between them. Some of the word problems in the first site below will help with this. 8th graders could also delve deeper into more advanced algebra concepts, as some of you should have the opportunity to move on and tackle Geometry during the next school year. Good luck and have a great summer! -- Mr. M

St. Francis Parish announces a benefit lunch on Sunday, June 22 at Outback Steakhouse

Time: 12:30 seating, lunch served at 1 pm
Menu: Caesar salad, chicken or steak, and fries
Cost: $15 adults, $10 children ages 10 and under. The lunch will benefit Bend Area Habitat for Humanity’s third annual Faith Build—the construction of a home supported financially and with volunteers by Bend’s faith community. The future owner of Faith Build 2008 is Kim Corpus and her four children. They will be introduced to you at masses on June 7-8 or June 14-15. Tickets will be sold after masses those same dates or call Robin Cooper at Bend Habitat, 385-5387 ext. 229.

Bend Area Habitat for Humanity, with God's guidance, works in partnership with deserving families and the community to build quality affordable homes. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please contact Sheila at 385-5387 or spyott@bendhabitat.org. We hope to see St. Francis parishioners working together on the Faith House this summer.

Greenhouse Project

Next year’s eighth grade class would like to construct a greenhouse on the property in order to grow fruit, vegetables, and flowers. If anyone would like to be involved in this project or would like to share their expertise, please contact Miss Maxwell.
